What is Flat Towing?
Flat towing – is a method of towing a vehicle behind a motorhome or RV with all four wheels of the towed vehicle on the ground. This type of towing also known as dinghy towing or four-down towing.
How Does Flat Towing Work?
Flat towing works by connecting a tow vehicle to an RV using a tow bar.
- All four wheels of the towed vehicle stay in contact with the road.
- A base plate is installed on the front of the vehicle, which attaches to the tow bar.
- Safety cables and a braking system are also typically required to ensure the towed vehicle is secure and can stop safely.
- The process involves putting the towed vehicle in neutral to prevent damage to its drivetrain, though not all vehicles are designed for flat towing.
- It’s important to consult the vehicle’s manual for specific instructions and requirements for flat towing.
